The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium – Most Beautiful Attractions

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is one of the most beautiful zoos in the world. Located in Powell, Ohio, the zoo is placed in the north of Columbus. It actually lies along the banks of the O’Shaughnessy Reservoir, on the Scioto River. The spot is absolutely breathtaking and the animals that can be seen here really impressive. Actually, the zoo homes more than 6300 animals, representing 793 species. It has a land area of 234 hectares. The zoo has become a much reputed one, actually being ranked as the number one zoo in the United States, back in 2009.

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium has over 2.3 million visitors every year. The area is divided into eight regions, but the zoo also includes an 18-hole golf course. Each region of the zoo represents a different part of the world. As regions are themed, perfect environments are created for animals.

Here are the most beautiful and interesting exhibits in the zoo, which should be visited by all tourists arriving at The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

  • The North America region is the largest and the oldest one in the zoo. A wetlands area can be seen here, but also impressive species of migratory birds. Animals include the Mexican and the Timber Wolf, the American Bison, the Bald Eagle and the Cougar.

  • The Polar Frontier is a spectacular place. This actually is one of the newest areas of the zoo, opening in March 2010. It commonly is considered to be an extension of the North America region. Polar bears, the Arctic Fox and the Brown Bear can be visited here. This place is considered to be one of the zoo’s most entertaining venues.

  • Asia Quest features waterfalls, caves and indoor habitats, but also an incredible Chinese forest. Species that can be seen in this exhibit area of The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium include the Tufted Deer, the White-Naped Crane, the Water Monitor and the Large Flying Fox.

  • The Australia region is quite impressive. It is located in the proximity of the Scioto River and it features Koalas, Kiwi birds and the Tiger Quoll. Red kangaroos and numerous other beautiful animals can be visited in this region of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

  • The African Forest region first opened in 2000. Primates, mammals and large cats, but also many species of birds can be seen here. Species include the Mandrill, the Black Duiker and the Bonobo.

  • The Pachyderms Region is also fascinating. Here visitors will be able to see the Asian elephant, the black rhinoceroses and an impressive indoor exhibit area.

  • The Shores region has become quite famous thanks to the fish species that can be seen here. Manatee aquariums are also beautiful, as well as the Discovery Reef, the Manatee Coast and the Reptile Habitat. Species include the West Indian Manatee, the Jamaican Boa and the King Cobra, among numerous others.

Eating venues and shops are placed all around the zoo. Visitors can also enjoy transportation by train, which travels through the North American region, and by boat, which circles in the Islands of the Southeast Asia region.

The Mangles-Illions Carousel is also a popular attraction of the zoo, as well as the Zoombezi Bay and Jungle Jack’s Landing. These attractions are located on or near the Wyandot Lake, which was purchased by The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium at the end of 2006.
